Perfect

IMG_2316 by lc_db

Spring time brings mild weather.

Mild weather is perfect for patio dining.

Patio dining is perfect to enjoy a locally breed beer.

Which... perfectly leads into today's image, a fresco of St. Arnold of Metz, the namesake of the local Saint Arnold's Brewery.

See what I did there?? Cheers.

The Congregation Beth Israel is the oldest Jewish congregation in Texas, its origins dating back to 1844. This building, built in 1925 was their temple until they moved to a new site in southwest Houston. Located on the corner of Austin and Holman streets it now acts as a performance theater for the Houston Community College system.

Stop and Smell the Flowers

IMG_2644 by lc_db

Well... sorta.

This "bouquet" survived the drought and from the looks of it could withstand most of what Mother Nature can throw at it.

This unique piece can be found outside the Edgar Odell Lovett College on the campus of Rice University.

Spring Has Sprung...

IMG_1204 by lc_db

Officially that is.

Located in front of the main entrance of the Houston Garden Center in Hermann Park, the Lillian Schnitzer fountain will soon be seeing a steady stream of visitors, I'm sure.

The sculpture itself is unnamed, but was created in Rome in 1875. Then, in 1964, the fountain was added to the sculpture and the entire piece was dedicated to the memory of Lillian Schnitzer.

Tolerance

IMG_2687 by lc_db

Last year the Boniuk Center for Religious Tolerance at Rice University, which offers a range of distinctive signature programs promoting religious tolerance, sponsored the Sacred Sites Quest. This entailed several high school students visiting 12 local religious sites of differing faiths and then under the guidance of the Museum of Cultural Arts Houston fashioned mural panels of their experience.

Several of them are now prominently displayed on the exterior walls of the Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston office located on Montrose.

Which FINALLY leads up to today’s image which is one of those panels, and IF you look closely enough you might see a certain photographer in action.

Islamic Da'Wah Center

IMG_2241 by lc_db

Now the Islamic Da'Wah Center, this building was originally the Houston National Bank built back in 1928. In 1994, local sports legend, Hakeem Olajuwon purchased the property in an effort to turn the building into an Islamic Educational Center. After years of extensive renovations the center finally opened to public in 2002. While not traditional in appearance, it is the only mosque in downtown Houston.

From a Different Viewpoint

IMG_9751 by lc_db

This cutout of Houston's Skyline shields the dog run within Market Square from the setting sun.

The little bits of mosaic tile you see on the ground are actual remnants from razed downtown buildings.

March Theme Day – Electricity

IMG_9253 by lc_db

This month’s City Daily Photo Community theme is “Electricity”.

Before it became Reliant Energy, Houston Lighting & Power Company supplied the city with its electricity, and this blast from the past is their 1948 Eastside sub-station, still displaying the original name.
