Two Halves Make a Whole

Well.... Not in this case. They just make two split obelisks. As promised, here is a better view of the entrance into UofH showing both halves.

Doing a Split

This split obelisk, designed by the SWA Group, is the focal point of the Cullen Blvd. Entrance as you come into the campus of the University of Houston.

It has a twin, which I'll introduce to you tomorrow. Well... If you look, you can catch a glimpse of it in the reflection of the polished marble.

Go Coogs!!

The University of Houston Cougar football team is undefeated in NCAA play so far this year and are presently ranked just outside the top ten at number 11 in the country. Led by record setting quarterback Case Keenum, they play rival SMU today in the national spotlight as ESPN’s College Gameday brodcasts their live show today from the university’s campus.

Rawr!!

Welcoming one to the Cullen Building on the campus of the University of Houston is this bronze (one of two actually) of the school's mascot.

Looks like it means business.

Feeling Boxed In?

This bronzed piece is Richard McDermott Miller's "Sandy in Defined Space". She resides (almost appropriately) just outside the Science and Research Building on the campus of the University of Houston.

This reminds me… I need to book an appointment with my chiropractor.

Hines College of Architecture

Designed by Philip Johnson and built in 1985, the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture Building on the campus of the University of Houston is one of the school’s marquee structures. Its Parthenon-esque cap actually has a glass floor that acts as the ceiling to the main building’s atrium.

Houston Public Televison

Based in the LeRoy and Lucile Melcher Center for Public Broadcasting on the campus of the University of Houston, is the nation first public television station.

HoustonPBS, channel 8 has been broadcasting since 1953 and was one of the first members of the Public Broadcasting Service that still brings us Seaseme Street, NOVA and Masterpiece Theater. Other local firsts include the first Houston station to utilize closed captioning in its broadcasts.

Spreading the Word…

Words cannot describe Jim Sanborn’s “A,A” sculpture on the University of Houston campus.

Well… perhaps they do.

Snippets from different novels, poems and prose displayed in various languages including Arabic, Russian, English and Chinese are projected across the nighttime face of the university’s M.D. Anderson library.

Sanborn, an American artist, is most famous for his “Kryptos” sculpture displayed at the C.I.A. headquarters in Virginia.
