From this Fifth Ward vantage point it seems these rail track have all the routes covered.

Watching the World Go By...

Another image from one of my "road less travelled" camera trips. This chair sits in an empty field just off the Elysian Viaduct.

Perhaps someone watches the traffic from it

...or waits for a train to pass

...or watches the sunset against the downtown skyline backdrop

...or maybe it's just junk in a vacant field.

November Theme Day - Fences

This month's theme for the City Daily Photo community is Fences.

While this might not be the most picturesque fence in town or a typical classic view, this image taken near the Elysian Viaduct is actually one of my favorite recent images. Something about the contrasting elements.

…and if it seems familiar it might be because I have already featured a similar shot HERE, but I thought reviving it for this month’s theme day was fitting.

Fruits of Labor...

A joint effort of Wheatley High School students and the Museum of Cultural Arts Houston, “Fruits of the Fifth Ward” is a mural depicting 21 notable people that are either natives or in some other way connected to the Fifth Ward area. Dedicated in 2006 it is located near Crawford Elementary.

A Funny Thing Happened On the Way...

You just never know what you will stumble across if you let yourself get lost. Located just off the Elysian Viaduct in the city's Fifth Ward is Blumenthal Sheet Metal, a fabricator that in the 90's decided to diversify and began working with individual artists helping them reach their imaginative goals.

This screen is part of their own display entitled “MetalHenge”, a series of screens bringing character to an otherwise barren street corner.

It's Not My Fault...

We Be Jammin'

From one eclectic performance venue to another.

"Fifth Ward Jam" is a combination of architectural art and public stage. Located on Lyons St. in the Fifth Ward, this work by Houston artists Dean Ruck and Dan Havel will have its grand opening on October 1 with a celebration of music and tales of this historic part of our city.

Don't Fence Me In

Driving about through the greater Fifth Ward area can provide a different perspective.

I just really enjoy the different feel of images like this.

Home Is What You Make It

This house is located near the intersection of Tuscon and Linder Streets in the city’s Fifth Ward, and obviously is a true testament of the owner’s beliefs.

You really have to admire their dedication.

Making the World a Better Place

MOCAH or rather the Museum of Cultural Arts – Houston is a museum without walls whose mission is to use art and creativity for community development and social awareness. They bring the arts to public venues in the form of murals and mosaics to be enjoyed by those that typically don’t visit the many galleries and museums that abound within Houston.

Utilizing local community leaders, volunteers and students of all ages, MOCAH gives them all a hand in creating a piece and then making it a permanent display within the community.

The Kashmere Multi Service Center in the Fifth Ward displays just one of the over 80 projects already completed within the city.

The World's In His Hands...

This sculpture is part of the entrance to the Mickey Leland Memorial Park.

A collection of public art and green space, it serves as a living memorial to the late Congressman and humanitarian. Dedicated in 2000, the park is located on the original site of Leland and Barbara Jordan’s first office on Cavalcade.

September Eleven

I pondered what today’s post should reflect. I supposed I might have chosen something with flags waving in the breeze, but instead selected one that depicts rebuilding and reclamation.

Today’s image comes from the Japhet Creek Dis(solve) Project, a volunteer initiative meant to recapture green space along the forgotten creeks that feed Buffalo Bayou.

These small iron letters, mounted to the underside of a bridge in Houston’s Fifth Ward ask us to “Wonder”… and that’s all we can do today.
