Constant Reminder

The Holocaust Museum-Houston opened in 1996 as the self-proclaimed living testimonial to those who died and a place to honor those who survived while trying to educate others on the dangers of prejudice and violence.

Holland Lodge #1

Holland Lodge #1 of the Ancient Free & Accepted Free Masons of Texas was the first Masonic Lodge in Texas. Originally formed in Brazoria in 1835, it relocated to Houston soon after the Battle of San Jacinto and the forming of the Republic of Texas. Their present lodge, built in 1954, is located in the Museum District on Montrose and sports this incredible structural mural.

Wavy Bits

This interesting piece of public art resides in front of the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft.

Canopy of Trees

Houston has its share of oak-lined streets and North Boulevard, just outside the Museum District is one such place.

W Shapes

Some use them for construction.

Mark Di Suvero used them to create his "Bygones" piece located across the street from the Menil Collection.

Backed Against the Wall

Located in the Cullen Sculpture Garden is this collection of Henri Matisse works. Back I, Back II, Back III and Back IV date between 1909 to 1930 and are aligned side by side by side by side.

All Roads Lead To…

Earlier in the year, the Museum of Fine Arts collaborated with Carlos Cruz-Diez to sponsor his “Color in Space and Time”. Part of that exhibit that still remains is his “Addicted Color Crosswalks” that seems to lead into the new Tut exhibit.

Mirror, Mirror...

A new addition to the Cullen Sculpture Garden is Dan Graham’s piece aptly entitled “Triangular Solid with Circular Inserts, Variation F”. This collection of two way mirrored glass, polished stainless steel and aluminum is quite the optic pleasure.

I like it.

A lot.

Tut Is Coming! Tut Is Coming!

Advertising the upcoming King Tutankhamun exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts is this 25-foot, seven-ton replica of Anubis.

The traveling show opens this coming week.

Lay of the Land

This is the fountain near the entrance to the Museum of Natural Science. The irregular bits are meant to depict the Texas Gulf Coast.

It's One O'Clock Somewhere...

Well... at least according to the sundial in front of the Museum of Natural Science it is.

Well... actually it was two o'clock, but someone forgot to inform the sun about Daylight Savings Time.

Shady Character...

This large oak is actually screening the view of the Menil Collection building behind it.

As the temperatures soar... shade becomes more my friend.

Except for air conditioning.

Sneaking Up...

With Tony Cragg’s “New Forms” in the background, this view gives the impression that I was sneaking up on someone.

Even IF that "someone" was just another sculpture within the Cullen Sculpture Garden.

Dots Mark the Spot

Located just outside The Children's Museum, highlighted yesterday, is this lamp post which seems to have become a tradition of sorts, as it is simply covered with museum attendance stickers from those that visited the museum.

A Playground for Your Mind

We could call use that from time to time, couldn’t we? Housed in the whimsically Robert Venturi-designed building, The Children’s Museum of Houston is 90,000 square feet of interactive fun for our younger citizens. Voted the best children’s museum in the country by Parent’s Magazine it houses several permanent exhibits, and is a VERY popular destination for birthday parties.

Mirror, mirror... is that a wall?

Today’s reflection is brought to you by the Alfred C. Glassell School of Fine Art. Part of the Museum of Fine Art - Houston, it’s exterior mirrored glass blocked wall is quite the eye catcher as one walks or drives by.

A Rift between us...
