This is the view of the Main Street Bridge as it crosses Buffalo Bayou near the historic birthplace of Houston, Allen's Landing. The concrete arched bridge, originally built in 1914, is still in use today.

September Theme Day – Perspective

This month's theme for the City Daily Photo community is Perspective.

It’s been over a year since I first discussed the Rails-to-Trails initiative HERE. Today’s image is towards the end of the Heights Hike/Bike trail near the county jail. The best part of this section of trail (in my opinion) is the newly renovated truss bridge that spans Buffalo Bayou just down stream from Allen’s Landing, the “birthplace” of Houston.

Bridging the Gap

The Fred Hartman Bridge spans the Houston Ship Channel just east of town. The longest cable-stayed bridge in Texas at 2.6 miles, it replaced the Baytown Tunnel when the ship channel was dredged to allow for bigger ships in 1995.

A Bridge Not That Far...

The recently constructed Rosemont Bridge over Buffalo Bayou allows hikers and cyclists a means to cross over between the two hike/bike paths on either side of Buffalo Bayou Park.

Not to mention offering a fairly nice view of the downtown skyline.

Sabine Street Bridge

Designed by W.W. Washburn and completed in 1924, the Sabine Street Bridge offers the perfect opportunity for snapping a photo of Houston's downtown skyline.

Hazard Street Bridge

Nothing fancy today, just and end view of the Hazard Street Bridge as it crosses over U.S. 59 just west of downtown.

Swing Time

This workable through truss swing bridge crosses Buffalo Bayou and enables high load barge traffic to pass this railroad crossing. Shame I wasn’t there to see it in action.

I just really enjoy the older bridges.

McKee Street Bridge

At the time of its completion in 1932 the McKee St. Bridge was the longest unreinforced concrete bridge in the world. Spanning Buffalo Bayou in the Warehouse District, this low-slung, wavy crossing wasn’t always so festive. In the 1980’s it became artist, Kirk Farris’ pet project as he removed years of urban neglect and gave it the new trademark colors.
