Holiday Traditions

IMG_2476 by lc_db

Last year, the Heights location of Jenni’s Noodle House displayed a not so traditional Christmas display of hot pink trees. This year, street artist, ack! used his talents to bring us this not so traditional winter scene.

Needless to say... Jenni's traditions are a little different than mine.

Art By Any Other Name...

IMG_2442 by lc_db

Is still art.

Right?

These balloons are drawing attention to the recently opened Cueto James Art Gallery in the Heights. Simple... yet clever.

Back In the Day...

IMG_1862 by lc_db

Neighborhoods had their own storefronts that allowed residents the opportunity to walk to obtain most of their daily needs.

Tucked away within the Heights is one remnant of that era. Long since closed, Barabash Grocery offered locals their daily requirements of groceries, meat and most importantly... beer.

March Theme Day – Favorite Part of Town

This month’s City Daily Photo Community theme is “Your Favorite Part of Town”.

Easy! The Heights. As the oldest planned community in Houston, this one time “street car community” is where I call home. As you can see in the photo, you can still have a bit of small town feel within the big city.

It’s eclectic and functional and only three miles from my downtown office. It has art galleries and studios, funky shops and antique dealers, highly regarded restaurants and icehouses. I get my hair cut in a barbershop that has been in a movie and I can even get my player piano repaired here (If I had one, that is). It has oak tree lined streets and the occasional century old Victorian house.

Sure… it has its dodgy bits, but it has character and history and it seems I discover something new about it as I wander about.

Beer and Burgers Friday

Here in Texas, “icehouses” have become somewhat of a cultural tradition. Basically... they are open air bars with overhead doors that open up to serve patrons ice cold beer on warm summer nights.

Last night however, we experienced a rarity in this part of the country: Freezing overnight temperatures and sleet giving way to today’s image.

At least the locals at Jimmy's Ice House in the Heights don’t have to worry about keeping their beer cold!!!

Chevron Houston Marathon

This morning, over 22,000 runners from all 50 states and over 30 different countries participated in both the marathon and half marathon distances of this year’s Chevron Houston Marathon. Competing in unseasonably warm (65° F) temperatures compounded with high humidity and intermittent showers, they wound their way through several different areas of town, including my own neighbourhood.

Winner Bekana Daba from Ethiopia set a new marathon course record by finishing in 2:07:04.

Just how fast is that??

Pretty fast.

National Pie Day

Today is National Pie Day, and nothing makes a day better than free pie. To my surprise, to celebrate, a local pie eatery, The Pie in the Sky Pie Co. was giving away free pie.

I had Lemon Cream, thank you for asking.

Nothing Says Christmas Like...

Hot Pink Christmas trees!!!

Usually, I'm more of a traditionalist, but this display of holiday spirit in front of Jenni's Noodle House (where it's all good in the noodlehood™) in the Heights had me humming non-traditional Christmas songs for the rest of the day.

Eleventh Day of the Eleventh Month

Some call it Veterans Day; some refer to it as Armistice Day, and still others, Remembrance Day. Regardless of its name, today is a day to remember those that served in the armed forces.

This is an image of the World War II Memorial located in the median of Heights avenue.

Beer and Burgers Friday

Crisp cool days...

Patio seating...

Seasonal craft beers...

It doesn't get much better than this. Now is the time of year that my favorite seasonal craft beer, St. Arnold's Christmas Ale, is being served through most local taps.

This day I located myself at the popular Heights area Onion Creek to sample this year's offering.

November Theme Day – Public Transportation

This month’s theme for the worldwide City Daily Photo community is Public Transport. Today’s image is the Heights area Transit Center, just one of several sheltered waiting areas provided by Metro that that acts as a transfer hub for multiple bus routes.

Creepy, Scary Halloween Post #2

Once upon a dark and stormy night in the Heights area of Houston, a rather large tree sustained wind damage. Pretty scary so far, hunh?

Fortunately (for the homeowner), this isn’t really a haunted tree… just a very unique way with dealing with the aftermath of a storm.

Fins to the Left... Fins to the Right

IMG_9805, originally uploaded by lc_db.

This flash from the past is a completely restored 1958 Cadillac Sedan DeVille that is on display in the Art Car Museum in The Heights area of Houston.

Technically... it's not really an "Art Car", but really...

Art is in the eye of the beholder.

or something like that.

The Lombard Lamp

IMG_9688, originally uploaded by lc_db.

Right... Just one.

This fixture was donated to the people of Houston by the City of Hamburg, Germany. Similar to the ones that grace the Lombard Bridge, this one sits in the Melvalene & Carl Cohen Plaza located in the Heights area of town.

Heights Theater

IMG_9095, originally uploaded by lc_db.

Built in 1929, the Heights Theater was an independent neighborhood theater until it was sold in the late 1950’s. It is now an event hall and on evenings that it is booked, it comes to life, giving us a glimpse of its former glory.

No Bones About It

Sorry... this is not a new archeological find on the banks White Oak bayou, but rather a very unique playground on the grounds of Travis Elementary School in the Heights area.

Rails To Trails

This is a recently opened 5-mile stretch of the MKT hike and bike trail that runs through the Heights area of Houston. Named after the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, it is part of the Rails-to-Trails Initiative that utilizes abandoned rail right of ways and converts them into bicycle and jogging trails. The Houston area has close to 15 miles of these converted trails.

White Linen Night

Tonight is White Linen Night in the Heights which is self billed as a sultry, steamy exotic and artfully provocative evening of championing art, culture and community. The Heights, the earliest planned community in Houston, is located just three miles northwest of downtown with a very eclectic mix of residents partnered in a “small town in a big city” setting. Plus… it’s where I’ve chosen to live, so I have that going for me… which is nice.

Borrowing the idea from New Orleans’ Art District, White Linen Night expects to draw close to 30,000 people to sample some of the best entertainment, boutiques, art galleries, restaurants and eclectic bars in Houston.
