I've shown some photos of Hermann Hospital's Original Entry before, but this view of the origianl tile work in its entry brings one back to a time when it first opened.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is back in town and this past weekend was the annual BBQ cook-off.

While I was unable to attend this is Eric Kaposta’s “Cookie” located in Carruth Plaza on the rodeo grounds at Reliant Park.

Coming Soon To a Wall Near You...

Five years ago a mural just like this one adorned the side of Mary’s Bar located near the intersection of Montrose and Westheimer. Eventually, it was painted over and last June it was recreated just prior to Houston’s Pride Parade.

I took this photo a month ago, and now… unfortunately it has been painted over again with the promise from its artists that it will “eventually” show up in another location soon.

Constant Reminder

The Holocaust Museum-Houston opened in 1996 as the self-proclaimed living testimonial to those who died and a place to honor those who survived while trying to educate others on the dangers of prejudice and violence.

Trinity Episcopal Church

Trinity Episcopal Church, located in Midtown, is the second oldest Episcopal parish in Houston. Its neo-Gothic building, shown here, dates back to 1919, but the roots of the parish date back to 1893.

Round and Round...

Today marks the 50th Anniversary of John Glenn's being the first American to orbit the earth. He did it in a Mercury capsule (the little black bit atop this Redstone rocket) which can be seen displayed at NASA's Rocket Park.

Curve Balls

Acting as part guardrail, part community enhancement, these colorful orbs protect a curve just before you enter the parking lot of the Baker-Ripley Neighborhood Center.

Located on the city’s southwest side, the center provides a safe and friendly atmosphere for local residents to learn new things and an opportunity for them to participate in community activities.

Breaking the Chains

Given to the city by the Mexican State of Jalisco to commemorate the 180th anniversary of Mexican independence, this statue of Miguel Hildalgo Y Costilla stands in Hildago Park on the city’s east side.

Not Your Typical Heart Day

Today is Valentine's Day and as usual, hearts will be featured on cards and advertising. I decided to take a different twist as today's image is from the Cooley family plot in Glenwood Cemetery. If the symbol looks familiar it is because I originally featured it HERE.

Go Ahead... Take Another Step Closer

From yesterday's close-up and you'll see this detail that covers the electric service boxes on the back of the building. Details most people don't notice as they drive by.

From yesterday's photo and you can appreciate the Mayan detail of the student's work. I wonder how many of them drive by and show off their work to others.

Painting the Wall

Now vacant, but still visible from the Gulf Freeway has you drive north towards downtown is this mural that was created in the fall of 2000 by art students from George Sanchez High School in the fall of 2000. Using the back wall of a now vacant distribution center, the project was funded in part by a grant from the Cultural Art Council of Houston and Harris County.

Semper Fidelis

Located in The Woodlands' Town Green Park is this tribute to Texas Marines.

Nothing Fancy

This whirly-gig (that's the scientific name, in case you were wondering) is from another visit to the folk art mecca, otherwise known as The Orange Show.

More Arches

This is the view of the Main Street Bridge as it crosses Buffalo Bayou near the historic birthplace of Houston, Allen's Landing. The concrete arched bridge, originally built in 1914, is still in use today.

Talon Park

The namesake and very visible part of Talon Park in Clear Lake is this Northrop T-38 Talon. NASA still operates a fleet of 32 T-38s, using them as chase planes and as a jet trainer for its astronauts.

No Clue...

Not sure what this glass paneled structure is or what purpose it serves, but what I do know is that is stands within the Facilities Operations Compound on the campus of Rice University.

Is it a piece of public art?

Maybe a collection panel for solar power?

It very well could just be something that tortures the occasional curious passerby, and in that case… it worked!!

Not sure what the story or history of this building located on the 2900 block of Main St. is, but it does have a sort of Eastern temple feel to it.
